What Is A Career Coach?

Maybe you’ve seen career coaches and know generally what they do, but how exactly can a career coach get you to the next level?

  1. The Internal 'Why': Identifying Your Motivations

First up is understanding your internal motivations. 'Why are you a musician?' This question might sound simple, but it has profound implications on your career direction. Your 'why' is tied to your personality, your values, your aspirations and can ground your career decisions during a period of change.

  2. The External 'What': Recognizing Your Skills

'What are your skills?' Are you a master in composition, an excellent performer, or a leader? Identifying and honing these skills is essential in getting to your ideal career design. A career coach can guide you towards opportunities that suit your skillset and facilitate your continuous growth.

  3. Career Design

You are the architect of your music career, but likely didn’t receive training in college for this. A career coach helps you design the career that matches your goals internally and externally and provides metrics to know if you’re working in the right direction.

  4. Self-Management

The journey of a musician isn't just about music; it's about managing your career, your business, and yourself. Musicians tend to think about the details, so a career coach can help you zoom out enough to optimize the process.

  5. Future

The most important job of a career coach, is ensuring you have a successful future that aligns with all of your aspirations and motivations. Sometimes this looks like launching a new artistic venture, learning a new skill, hiring a virtual assistant, or seeking out partnerships.

Career coaches are allies, guides, and sounding boards for your ideas and ambitions. If you need better work/life balance, more money, more time, better students, better clients, or more success in general…you need a career coach!
